US hits 3 million coronavirus cases, ICUs run out of space

Updated: Aug 22, 2020

As the pandemic worsens in the United States, the country has hit to 3 million cases after 60,000 new cases were confirmed in a single day as of Tuesday according to a Reuters tally.

The rate at which COVID-19 is spreading in the country has astonished doctors and the government with more than 132,000 people dying from the disease since January, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The increasing rate of the virus in the country has left hospitals running out of ICU capacity to accommodate its patients.

Dr Nicholas Namias, the medical director at the trauma centre at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami told CNN, "Right now we're not looking at anything apocalyptic going on in the hospital but we are flirting every day with the edge of capacity”.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said on Tuesday that they urgently needed medical professional, testing kits and more supplies.

"Our hospital is already in dire straits, and they tell us in the next two weeks it is going to get to an unbearable level of crisis," Kate told the media.

This falls after many states started lifting restrictions such as Florida, Arizona and Texas even after seeing a spike in cases.

Once Florida began reopening, the country’s coronavirus cases took three months to hit from 100,000 to 200,000 according to CBS Miami.

According to Florida’s health agency, more than 40 hospitals in Florida are full of 5,000 patients using the states 83% ICU beds.

Arizona has also experienced worst daily death counts once in a week and the same day the state reported about 90% of ICU beds are full.

Despite increasing cases in the country, US President Donald Trump has launched an effort to push states to reopen schools in the fall.

He claimed that99% of coronavirus cases in the United States were "totally harmless.” during an Independence Day speech at the White House on Saturday.

The Republican President believes that the country is "in a good place" and will be in "very good shape" in the next few weeks despite a warning from the nation's top infectious disease expert.

As a way to curb the pandemic in the country, Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert encouraged Americans to wear masks and practice social distancing.

"When you look at what we can do that we know works, it's the use of masks, physical distance and avoiding crowds. So, if you're saying it doesn't matter whether you put it on or take it off, you're giving a wrong, mixed-signal. The signal should be: Wear a mask, period.” Fauci stated.

US reported its first cases of COVID-19 on January 21 and in a period of 99 days; over 1 million Americans got infected followed by 2 million cases just after 43 days.

And globally, more than 11.8 million cases have been reported and over 545,000 people have died due to the virus
