UPDF to regulate all quarantine centres in Kampala

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) Health teams together with the Ministry of Health have combined to curb the dangerous COVID-19.

The groups of trained doctors have been sent out to all quarantine and isolation centers in Kampala and Entebbe to make sure that no individual runs away from quarantine as earlier reported.

The army spokesperson Brigadier Richard Karemire said, “Dr. Captain kyitahimbwa of air force and Dr Captain Magoba of SFC have been tasked to oversee all quarantine centers in Kampala and Entebbe areas to ensure compliance with the already given guidelines,” via his social media page.

The hotels where quarantine and isolation are being conducted by the Health Ministry include; Protea, Imperial Botanical, Central Inn and Mission Hotel among others including Arch Apartments, Emin Pasha Hotel among others.

This measure came after a group of Chinese nationals together with their Ugandan driver and his wife escaped from quarantine at Africana hotel, in Kibuli.

They were arrested in Zombo district, near the border with Democratic Republic of Congo as they tried to flee the country before being returned to Kampala.

They eloped immediately after Uganda stopped accepting any more foreigners through its airport after abuse of the quarantine arrangement organized by the ministry of health.

However, the 8 Chinese and their Ugandan collaborators are expected to be charged at Nakawa Court on Monday.

According to the Health Minister, Dr.Jane Ruth Aceng, a total of 1827 travelers including Ugandans have been quarantined over the coronavirus pandemic and 1000 are still under quarantine.

“To date, a total of 1827 travellers including Ugandans and others travelling back home have been identified as coming from high-risk countries for purposes of follow-up. About 827 are completing self-quarantine while about 1000 are under quarantine,” Aceng said.

This was hours before Uganda declared its first confirmed COVID-19 case, a 36 year old male Ugandan who flew back home on March 21, 2020 at around 2 am aboard Ethiopian airlines.

The infected person is a resident of Kibuli, Kakungulu zone in Kampala who had travelled to Dubai on March 17, 2020 for a business trip.

However, The Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine has urged Ugandans to follow guidelines issued by the government to stop the virus from spreading.

“When it is time to listen, Ugandans should listen. When it is time to act they should act instead of spending more time talking they should implement. Countries that delayed to act are having greater challenges,”Dr.Atwine said.
