UNEB is not considering online examinations

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

On Friday Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) notified the public that it is not considering online examinations despite the government's continuous directives to close schools.

UNEB's executive secretary Dan Nkorach Odongo trashed social media false information that the exams body will consider online exams if the coronavirus lockdown continues.

He said, "It has come to the attention of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) that there are some unscrupulous people operating a fake social media account in the name of UNEB. They are circulating wrong information that UNEB is likely to consider conducting online Examinations if pandemic conditions persist.

"UNEB disassociates itself from such fake information and informs the general public that online examinations have not been considered as an option," Odongo stated.

He concluded that UNEB shall wait for guidance from the Ministry of Education and Sports on the re-opening of schools and subsequent conduct of examinations.

On April 4 2020, Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni declined the option of having online examinations by some institutions while addressing the nation.

She said, “We have received several complaints and concerns that some Universities are forcing students to pay for and do online examinations during this period yet, quite a number of students do not have the required facilities and money to do them. We have, therefore, decided that all these examinations be suspended until we are out of this crisis.”

Four months ago, President Museveni ordered the closure of all primary and secondary schools, university and other institutions across the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Recently, the government eased lockdown restrictions by allowing some arcades and businesses to resume work but educational institutions have still remained closed.

According to world meters, Uganda still stands at 1,056 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 1,023 recoveries with no deaths.
