The Commissioner Citizenship and Passport Control Brigadier Johnson Namanya has urged all Ugandans that have old passports to replace them with the new E-passports.
He stated this during a presser at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala on Thursday stressing that all passports will be phased out with effect from January 15 2021.
“Old passports are going to be phased on January 15, 2021, and we will all be required to use the new e-passports,” he said.
The application and renewal of the E- passports will cost Uganda Shillings 250, 000 and by March, centres in Mbale, Mbarara and Gulu districts will be able to receive applicants’ details for passports.
He added that online application is quicker since an applicant does not need to get a recommendation from local leaders as it were initially.
The application process is integrated with the National Identity Registration Authority-NIRA and National Identity Technology Authority- NITA-U.
This approach will solve the overwhelming numbers of people that line up for their passports at the immigration office in Kampala. “We want to serve Ugandans better without a rush,” he added.
Namanya detailed that government will also extend the E-passport services to missions abroad for Ugandans who for instance need assistance to renew their passports.
The services will be rolled out in May in London, Washington, Pretoria, South Africa, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, and Canada.
