Uganda's confirmed coronavirus cases shoot to 8

On Monday night, the Ministry of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng confirmed 8 more new cases of coronavirus in the country.


According to Aceng, all the eight cases are Ugandan nationals who travelled back from Dubai, United Arab Emirates; two on March 20 and six on March 22 aboard the Emirates and Ethiopian Airlines flights.


They include a 37-year-old from Rubaga division, Kampala traveled to Dubai, 35-year-old resident of Ntinda, Kampala arrived from Dubai on March 22, 34-year-old resident of Makindye, Kampala, 30-year-old resident of Seguku, Kampala, 28-year-old resident of Baale, Kayunga, 35-year-old from Nkokonjeru Nsangi.


She also added that these 8 new cases were got from the 35 samples tested on Monday at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Six of the 8 cases were intercepted at Entebbe Airport and 2 were picked from the areas of self-quarantine.


This came after Uganda confirmed it’s the first case of COVID-19 on Sunday morning from a Ugandan who had travelled to Dubai on March 17 and returned on Saturday. By yesterday, the ministry confirmed that the patient is showing signs of improvement.

So far, a total of 2,661 travelers including Ugandans identified as potential risk have been either under self-quarantine or institutional quarantine.


Of these, 1,356 are under follow up; 774 of these are under institutional quarantine while 582 are under self-quarantine. Said the Minister during a presser telecast live on local TV.


However, the president is yet to address the nation with new guidelines on how to prevent the spread of coronavirus.


“With eight new cases of COVID-19 confirmed yesterday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will address the country today at 4pm. Broadcast will be live on televisions and radios,” senior presidential press secretary, Mr Don Wanyama tweeted on Tuesday.


On Wednesday last week while addressing the nation, the president ordered closure of schools and suspended all social, political, religious and cultural gatherings and encouraged the general public to maintain hygiene through hand washing and use of disinfectants.
