Uganda might go into a second lockdown

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Despite the increasing number of COVID -19 cases and deaths in the country, Ugandans are still relaxed on following the presidential guidelines to curb the pandemic.

Many are seen moving along the streets of Kampala without masks nor keeping social distance, which keeps them at a high risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Kampala is the Centre and the busiest places in Uganda, the government is greatly concerned about the increasing cases of coronavirus.

On Saturday, The Minister for Information Hon Judith Nabakooba announced that if Ugandans don’t follow the guidelines, they are likely to go into the second phase of lockdown.

She uttered her fears that a big number of Ugandans are likely to perish while others get infected with COVID-19 because of the laxity the public has shown since Museveni eased lockdown.

“It is unfortunate that despite the deaths and rising community infections, many people are still failing to go by the preventive measures provided by the Ministry of Health,” said the Minister.

“The Key issue and concern for the government as of today continues to be the COVID-19 pandemic, Uganda has continued to register more COVID-19 deaths and this should be a major worry for everyone,” added Nabakooba

According to the Ministry of Health, community infections have also started to increase in areas such as Kampala, Kyotera and Amuru districts.

The government stated that it will soon enforce wearing of face masks and there will be no excuse for not having one since over 8 million Masks have been distributed countrywide.

Earlier in May, Government started enforcing the compulsory wearing of facemasks by Ugandans after the lockdown was eased.

Everyone was required to move out of their homes with a facemask, ensure social distancing and use of hand sanitizers to curtail the novel coronavirus.

“We are going to make it mandatory for everybody who is not in his/her house to wear a cloth face mask covering all the time; the mouth and the nose,” Museveni said during an address to the nation.

On Saturday, Uganda registered another COVID-19 death bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to four. The deceased was a 61-year-old female, a resident of Kiyimbi in Nakulabye, Kampala who died on Friday.

Now Uganda has 1,182 confirmed cases, 1045 recoveries and 4 deaths.
