Uganda Coronavirus cases rise to 18

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

Uganda has registered four more new cases of COVID 19 to bring the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 18.

President Museveni on Friday said the four cases had been under institutional quarantine in the various hotels.

"The 197 people who were tested, many of them were returnees from Dubai or another category 1 countries, only four tested positive,” he said in a statement posted on his social media.

“It seems, therefore, that the efforts of identifying by temperature monitoring at the airport, quarantining the people on whom there’s some suspicion and tracing the ones who escaped from the quarantine are working well.

“Fortunately, as we can see, many of the people are negative. The other good news is that the majority of the 14 people who are hospitalized at Entebbe, Mulago and Masaka with the virus are responding well to the treatment and seem to be improving,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Government is tracing an unspecified number of missing people who arrived from Dubai in the last two weeks as Uganda’s Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

Dr Henry Mwebesa, the Director-General of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, yesterday said 574 individuals travelled from Dubai in the last two weeks and are in various places in the country, but following government appeal, 60 of them have been tracked and screened.

“The ministry is in possession of all the passenger details from the respective airlines. We have so far screened 60 travellers at Mulago specialised hospital. We further direct all persons who travelled from Dubai in the past two weeks to come to Ward 2A at Mulago Specialised Hospital for assessment,” Dr Mwebesa said in a televised address to the public yesterday.

President Museveni called upon everyone who returned from Dubai in the last to weeks to come forward for testing, saying they pose a great risk to themselves, their families, loved ones and the general public if they continue hiding.

Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, said many of those who travelled from Dubai are coming for testing.

The Ministry of Health urges the general public to wash their hands with soap and clean water, avoid overcrowded places and stay at home when they are sick to stop the further spread of coronavirus.
