Museveni okays schools to open for finalist medical students

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

President Museveni has approved the reopening of institutions with finalists undertaking health-related courses.

A letter from Mary Okwakol, the executive director of the National Council for Higher Education (NHCE) details that the president has approved the reopening of institutions with final year students undertaking Health-Related Training.

The approval is aimed at enabling medical students to complete their studies so as to fill the Human Resource gap the Health sector would likely face.

This is timely as Health experts prepare for the worst-case scenarios, coronavirus cases are rising throughout the country. The results of the COVID-19 tests done on 31st August 2020 confirmed 65 new cases with cumulative confirmed cases of Ugandans to 3,037 and 32 deaths.

It is now 5 months since all educational institutions were closed by the government in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Medical graduates are needed more than ever to fill the spaces in health centres not only created by the coronavirus pandemic but also other diseases.

Professor Mary Okwakol stressed that the medical interns need to complete their education cycle this academic year to allow new entrants next year.

"If the internship schedule is not followed, there would be a gap which could lead to a gap in the health sector," Okwakol said.

Indeed, the best training for medical students would be now as the country grapples with the pandemic.

The considered candidates so far are finalists undertaking; Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing, Midwifery, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy and Allied Medical Professionals.

The list also includes; finalist postgraduate students on health-related programmes, finalists undertaking training at diploma level and postgraduate students. That is doctors, nurses and midwives who are qualified and are already health practitioners and students pursuing diploma programmes in all health-related disciplines.
