Minister Rukutana Remanded Till September 15 in Ntungamo

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

The Minister of State for Labour, Mwesigwa Rukutana has been remanded to Kyamugorani Prison in Mbarara by a Ntungamo Chief Magistrate until 15th September 2020.

Mwesigwa Rukutana is charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, malicious damage, and threatening violence during the last week NRM Primaries.

His three bodyguards are also charged with negligence of duty and abetting a criminal act of attempted murder.

According to the Ntungamo Police, Station Charge Sheet CRB 1050/2020, Rukutana and his bodyguards on the 5th of September 2020 violated section 236 of the Penal Code Act by inciting violence.

Today, Mwesigwa Rukutana has appeared before the Chief Magistrate in Ntungamo for a bail application to no avail and was later remanded to Kyamugorani prison.

Rukutana's lawyers claim that the Minister and his bodyguards did not commit any crime. He did not release any bullet as the media says.

''At no point did the Minister and his bodyguards release any bullet. The weapons of the Minister's bodyguards were retrieved by the Police and are available for inspection. The truth shall be established that the weapons never released any bullet, nor is there any shell of any bullet at the scene.'' The lawyer explained.

Mr Rukutana is reported to have shot a man identified as Daniel Rweiburungi during the fracas and was arrested trying to flee into Rwanda by Uganda security officers.

The Minister, together with his three guards had so far spent three nights at Mbarara Police cells.

Yesterday, Grade one magistrate, Nazifzh Namayanja remanded Rukutana to Kyamugorani Prison in Mbarara in a late prosecution.

Marked violence was reported in real-time on social media during the NRM party primaries throughout the country.

Most NRM incumbents and top Museveni Ministers were voted out of the primaries because the population thinks they have become out of touch and inaccessible.

President Museveni warned that all those who caused chaos during the Party primaries will face the iron hand of the law.
