Kenya to re-open churches, services to last only an hour

Despite the rising numbers of coronavirus infections in Kenya, the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has eased some of the restrictions that were put in place to curb the virus.

While addressing the nation on Monday 6 July 2020, he declared that places of worship would commence phased re-opening for congregational and pubic worship.

These places of worship should consist of a maximum of 100 participants and the service should not last longer than an hour.

Worship shall not include congregants under the age of 13, above the age of 58, and persons with underlying health conditions. He said.


Uhuru uplifted restrictions in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties, which are some of the regions with the highest coronavirus cases.


“I order and direct that the cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa County and Mandera County, that is currently in force, shall lapse at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020," he said.

However,the domestic local flights may resume from 15 July while the International flights from 1 August with strict Covid-19 protocols expected to be followed.

So far Kenya has recorded 7,886 cases of Covid-19, including 160 deaths.


Since originating in Wuhan, China in December, the coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 537,480 lives in 188 countries and regions. 

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 11.59 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries exceeding 6.28 million.
