Kenya’s Ministry of Education has declared the academic year 2020 a lost year due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the country.
During a press address at KICD On Tuesday 7 July 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha stated that Standard Eight and Senior Four students will sit for their exams in 2021.
“Schools will re-open next year that is when KCPE and KCSE examinations will be done,” Magoha said.
Therefore all learners will be required to repeat their current classes when schools re-open next year since it might safer.
Magoha added that schools will only be resume once the new coronavirus curve is firmed and the exams previously scheduled for March have now been pushed to mid-August or end of 2021.
“What will determine if we reopen is if we can maintain the social distancing. But now the peak will be in September and taper in January.” Prof Magoha said.
However, Tertiary institutions, universities, Teacher Training Colleges and TVETS are likely to re-open in October in phases.
Therefore Teachers will be expected to report to their schools two weeks before the re-opening dates while candidates will be given priority during the re-opening.
Face-to-face learning in universities will take place on a case by case basis and in line with compliance with Covid-19 protocols. He continued
“Universities should continue holding virtual learning and graduations for students who have successfully completed their programmes and met graduation requirements set by their respective senates,” Magoha concluded.
President Uhuru Kenyatta soon after the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in the country ordered schools in Kenya to be closed on March 15.
To date, Kenya has 8,067 cases of coronavirus with 164 deaths and 2414 recoveries.
