The national council for higher Education has granted permission to 13 universities to start conducting online classes.
The approved universities include; Uganda Martyrs University (UCU), Victoria University, ISBAT University, Uganda Christian University (UCU), Aptech, Lira University and Metropolitan International University.
Others permitted institutions are Cavendish University, Law Development Centre, the International University of East Africa, African Renewal University and the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research Institute.
Professor Jane Okwalkol, the Executive Director of NCHE advised the approved institutions to apply for renewal at least two months before the expiry of 12 months allotted.
"I wish to remind you that under section 3 (c) of our constitution, the guidelines for the adoption of an Emergency Modle System, the permission is valid for 12 months or duration of the COVID-19 crisis as will be determined by relevant authorities," she stated in a letter.
President Museveni ordered the closure of educational institutions in March 2020, at the height of the global coronavirus pandemic.
However, the President is easing restrictions in a phased manner as advised by the scientists.
In July 2020, Mr Museveni started a step by step reopening of the economy that saw many businesses spring back to life.
The President yesterday directed the reopening of institutions with finalists undertaking health-related courses such as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing, Midwifery, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy and other health-related disciplines.
