Kadaga trounces Namuganza in bitterly contested NRM poll

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

The speaker of parliament Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has been re-elected as the 2nd National Vice Chairperson of the ruling NRM after crushing her competitor Lands Minister Persis Namuganza.

Kadaga ascended to victory with a total 6,776 votes compared to Namuganza’s 3,943.

The NRM Electoral Commission chairman Dr Tanga Odoi announced the results live from Kyadondo Plot 10/13 in the wee hours of Friday morning.

“I declare Kadaga has won, despite some results pending,” said Tanga.

Kadaga and Namuganza had a bitter contest in the 2nd National Vice Chairperson in the NRM CEC Elections.

The speaker faced stiffer opposition after audio of chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa asking members to vote for her rival Namuganza circulated on social media.

She squashed Ms Namuganza by telling NEC members that the position she holds in the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) requires experience and knowledge.

During her campaigns, the speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga requested the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to consider rewarding her for the endless efforts in lifting the presidential age limit.

In 2017, 317 Members of Parliament mainly from NRM voted to amend the constitution to allow President Museveni who will be 76 in 2021 to contest for his 6th elective term as president.

The Ugandan Constitution, enacted in 1995, previously prohibited anyone younger than 35 or older than 75 from serving as president.

The 62-year-old legislator also reminded the NEC of her achievements, including international recognition and also a person who has for years fought for the rights of women.

Ms Kadaga has since taken a comfortable lead wining in most of the Central and Eastern districts including Lyantonde, Kanungu, Yumbe, Kabale, Kasese, Kamwenge, and her home district of Kamuli.

In the other positions competed for, Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah won the Vice-Chairperson Northern region slot in with 7,474 beating his rival Sam Engola with a vote difference of 5,809.

Minister Kiwanda Godfrey Ssuubi emerged victorious in the Vice-Chairperson Central region race with 4,749 votes.

His contenders Moses Kalangwa Kalisa got 3,701, John Magaro 675 and Moses Mayengo 127 votes.

Capt. Mike Mukula claimed the Vice-Chairperson Eastern slot walking away with 5,818 votes. Mukula brushed aside a threat from Sanjay Tana (4,162) and Christine Harriet Akello (162).

The Newcomer Dr Chris Baryomunsi, Vice-Chairperson Western Region gained with 5947 votes beating the incumbent Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza who got 2550 votes.

Vice Chairperson for Kampala Singh Katongole got 4503 votes whereas his rivals Amooti Nyakana and Uhuru Salim scooped 2665 votes each.
