GEN. TUMUKUNDE REMANDED AT LUZIRA PRISON

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Retired Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde has been confined at Luzira prison after being charged with treason and unlawful possession of firearms at City Hall Court in Kampala.

On March 13th, 2020, Tumukunde was found in possession of 2 guns, an Ak47 and a pistol during his arrest at his office in Impala Avenue in Kololo.

Prosecution’s Viola Tusingwire claimed that Tumukunde did not have a valid license for the guns as required by the law.

However, in court before grade one magistrate Valerian Tuhimbise, Tumukunde denied being in possession of firearms illegally and unlawful possession of rounds of ammunition saying they were given to him upon retirement.

The Former security minister on Sunday collapsed in police custody and was hospitalized at Kololo Hospital till when he appeared at City Hall Court on Wednesday under tight security.

After reading out the charges, magistrate Tuhimbise ruled that the retired army officer would be allowed to access his medical doctors while on remand.

Also, while appearing on NBS TV Gen Tumukunde said "If I was Rwanda, I would support those who want to cause a change in Uganda."

Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson said that Tumukunde’s expressions seek to foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence, glorifying violence in general.

Tumukunde was remanded until the 30th of March hence he will not appear physically at court but will instead remain in prison as Buganda Road court will use an audio-visual link.

The retired general was arrested last week by a combined team of security personnel and has been in police custody for six days.
