Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who had been in an intensive care unit since last month has died.
His death was confirmed by Egyptian state news on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the Al-Watan website reported that he died at a military hospital.
The 91-year-old is said to have suffered complications after undergoing surgery on his intestines.
His death comes just days after two of his sons were acquitted of illicit share trading during the sale of a bank four years.
Before he entered politics, Mubarak was a career officer in the Egyptian Air Force and he served as its commander from 1972 to 1975 and rose to the rank of air chief marshal in 1973.
Mubarak was the first leader to face trial after the Arab Spring uprisings that swept the region ousted in 2011.
In the same year, he was arrested in April, two months after leaving office, and had been held in prison and in military hospitals under heavy guard.
He was later released in March 2017 and final murder charges were cleared against him.
Mubarak’s presidency lasted for almost 30 years, during which time he clamped down on dissent and jailed political opponents.
Known by his nickname as the modern-day "Pharoah", Mubarak ruled Egypt as an autocrat for three decades from 1981to 2011 making him Egypt's longest-serving ruler since Muhammad Ali Pasha.
Many Egyptians who lived through his presidency view it as a period of stagnation, autocracy, and crony capitalism.
In the years since then, authorities have crushed his enemies in the Muslim Brotherhood, killing hundreds and jailing thousands, while his allies regain influence.
Mubarak is the second former president of Egypt to die in the last year after Mohamed Morsi died after fainting in court last June.
