Desperate Cries for Help From Ugandans Stranded in China

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

Hundreds of Africans, mostly students, are still stranded in China amid deteriorating conditions. Some have been forced out of their apartments and are sleeping hungry on pavements.

The Ugandan Government stressed that with some money wired onto students accounts through their embassy in Beijing, students would stay in China until the lockdown was relaxed.

Now with increasing signs of Wuhan and other cities returning back to life, there are desperate calls from not only Ugandans but other African nationals being mistreated by the Chinese locals.

This mistreatment is reported to have intensified as China government started opening its cities for business. Campaigns have since emerged on social media calling on governments to look into the plight of Africans in China.

Foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa has expressed concerns over the mistreatment of Ugandans in China.

In the meeting, the Chinese Ambassador H.E Zheng and Minister Sam Kuteesa discussed the continued harassment of Uganda nationals. "We call upon the Government of China to urgently intervene and address the plight of Ugandans in China." He told the Ambassador.

Ambassador Zheng Zhuquiang assured the Minister that China values its relationship with Uganda and other countries. He said the Chinese government is taking steps to address the matter and committed to tackling the concerns of Ugandans with the relevant authorities in China.

On the #Coronavirus spread, there are reports that China has shown in-roads to stop COVID-19 in its tracks.

While more than 1,768,019 cases of the respiratory illness have been recorded globally as of Saturday, there is a sharp decline in china of only 46, demonstrating that the course of the outbreak there has been altered.

The #CoronavirusEpicentre has now shifted to the United States reporting 519,453 and 20,071 deaths. New York State is grappling with the highest number of COVID-19 cases of any country in the world.
