CORONAVIRUS SCOURGE HITS 76,000 GLOBALLY

Updated: Aug 18, 2020

Medical authorities warned about the spread of the coronavirus beyond China on Thursday as Japan reported its first two deaths from the Diamond Princess cruise liner.

In Hubei province; the epicentre of the coronavirus, 108 people died of the virus on Wednesday, raising the death toll since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak to 2,029. The Hubei report brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to at least 2,112.

The global death toll from coronavirus has risen to at least 2,120, with eight deaths reported outside of mainland China. Hong Kong and Iran have each reported two deaths from coronavirus.

Taiwan, the Philippines, and France have each reported one death.

The global number of confirmed coronavirus cases now exceeds 76,262, with the vast majority of cases in mainland China.

In South Korea, cases soared by nearly two-thirds, mostly in the southern part of the peninsula, national authorities said.

The mayor of Daegu, the city where 10 South Koreans contracted the disease from a church service, asked residents to stay indoors.

Many international experts say the disease will continue to spread globally even as the Chinese government seeks to present the image that it is coming to grips with the epidemic.
