CHINA EMBASSY ALERTS CITIZENS ON A PNEUMONIA DEADLIER THAN CORONAVIRUS IN KAZAKHSTAN

Updated: Aug 22, 2020

As Kazakhstan, a central Asian country continues to battle with COVID-19, an “unknown pneumonia” has claimed lives of 1,772 people in the first six months of the year including 628 people in June alone.

This deadly virus has condensed in the regions of Atyrau, Aktobe and Shymkent, all together having 500 new cases and more than 30 critically ill patients, said the embassy statement, citing local media.

Kazakhstan’s healthcare minister said on Wednesday that the number of patients sickened by the pneumonia is two to three times more than those who have been infected with Covid-19, according to Chinese state media.

Kazakhstan's President Kassim-Jomart Tokayev has said the country could be facing a second wave of infections since the situation with coronavirus spread in the country is still serious.

"We are, in fact, facing the second coronavirus wave coupled with a huge uptick in pneumonia cases," the president stated.

According to a state news agency Kazinform, Kazakhstan has registered 53,021 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 264 deaths, with 34,931 recoveries as of Thursday.

The Chinese embassy also said that the new disease has a fatality rate much higher than Covid-19.

"Up to 200 people are admitted to hospitals every day. Over the last few days, some 300 people diagnosed with pneumonia were taken to hospitals a day.

Besides some receive treatment at home," said the head of the Nursultan healthcare department, Kazinform reported.

Despite the increasing rate of pneumonia and coronavirus in the country, the Chinese embassy has called on Chinese citizens in the country to be vigilant.

They were advised to reduce outdoor activities and also encouraged its citizens to wear masks, wash hands frequently and disinfect spaces.

“The Chinese embassy in Kazakhstan reminds Chinese nationals here to be aware of the situation and step up measures to lower the infection risks,” the embassy statement said.

Meanwhile, the health ministry claims there is a high demand for medical staff, hospital beds and emergency supplies, according to Xinhua.

So far, the total number of recorded COVID-19 cases in China currently stands at 84,743, with 4,641 deaths and 79,591 recoveries.
