Updated: Jul 21, 2020

Justin Trudeau's wife Sophie GrégoireTrudeau has tested positive for coronavirus after a public event in the UK.

This happened after she experienced some mild symptoms following a speaking engagement in the UK on Wednesday and immediately sought medical advice and testing.

"Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau was tested for COVID-19 today. The test came back positive," the Prime Minister's office said in a statement, adding she would remain in isolation for 14 days since her symptoms were slight.

Grégoire Trudeau, 44, thanked those who've reached out to her and said she's doing well.

"Although I'm experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon," she said in a message via the PM's Office.

However, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who has no symptoms of the deadly virus will continue his duties and address the country on Friday, his office said.

"The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms," his office added. Nevertheless, he will also be in isolation for two weeks and with the advice from his doctors, he will not be tested for the virus.

"For the same reason, doctors say there is no risk to those who have been in contact with him recently," his office said.

Since the new coronavirus first emerged in late December 2019, more than 130,000 cases have been recorded in 116 countries and territories, killing at least 4,900 people, according to an AFP tally.

And So far, there have been closely 150 cases in Canada with one death and this has forced government officials around the world to take safety actions to control the spread of the virus.
