Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Presidential Aspirant and Kyadondo East MP, Hon. Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has taken over the leadership of an existing political party, National Unity Platform in preparations for the 2021 Uganda Presidential elections.

Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi re-launched the new political party which has been under the leadership of Nkonge Kibalama at his offices in Kamwokya in Kampala on Wednesday afternoon.

Bobi Wine revealed on Facebook that he decided to merge with NUP after realizing that his pressure group, People Power would not be registered as a political party in President Museveni’s regime.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I stand here today to announce to the nation that we are launching the National Unity Platform,” he said amid ululations.

The former President of the National Unity Platform, Mr Nkonge said that they have closely followed Bobi Wine and found out that he is an inspirational leader. His songs and leadership in Kyadondo East have been an inspiration.

He added that their partnership with the People Power pressure group has been in the making since 2016.

This is the year in which Robert Kyagulanyi was elected as a Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East constituency.

"We have formed this Party after carefully thinking about it and we lack nothing in terms of accountability. We have come with clean hands." Nkonge assured People Power supporters.

Bobi Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP) will go up against President Yoweri Museveni and his ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The famous Uganda artist turned politician added that he will use the new political party to capture the support of more Ugandans against the oppressive 34-year rule of NRM.

Bobi Wine told his supporters that he initially had plans of registering People Power as a political organization but his efforts were frustrated by President Museveni’s invisible hand in the Electoral Commission (EC).

“Even if we try again, they will do the same thing they have done before. You saw last time Balaam saying he had registered People Power as his thing. They will play all cards to frustrate our plans, but we are going to use different methods.’’ He emphasized.

Mr.Joel Ssenyonyi, the spokesperson of People Power publicized that all their candidates in the 2021 elections will use the umbrella as their symbol.

Sseyonyi added that they have not ignored the other political parties such as JEEMA and the Alliance for National Transformation. Discussions are still going on between party leaders and the People Power group.

While unveiling the party symbol, Bobi Wine revealed that this an answer to the questions that many of his supporters have been asking.

He added that the umbrella will be a symbol their aspirants will use in the 2021 general election.

According to Bobi Wine, all political activities will continue running as the People Power movement.
