5 EXERCISES THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR EYESIGHT

Updated: Aug 18, 2020

Exercising your eyes is just like exercising your arms and legs just like the body, eyes too have muscles that need to be stretched. Exercising your eyes on a regular basis keeps them strong and healthy.

For centuries, people have promoted eye exercises as a “natural” cure for vision problems, including eyesight.

These exercises correct refractive errors that are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, which are errors stemming from altered eye anatomy or structure which you are born with.

Many people find that they can keep their vision strong longer than those who do not exercise their eyes regularly.

Studies show that our modern use of technology causes eye strain. Most of us use a computer, smartphone, or watch a lot of television.

As a result, more and more people are having vision problems and wearing contact lenses and glasses.

Eye exercises probably won’t improve your vision, but they can help with eye comfort, especially if your eyes get irritated at work.

Use the eye exercises listed below to create healthier eye muscles and reduce eye strain.

Blinking.

Blinking is a reflex function, and even though so claimed, there is no conclusive evidence that it helps improve your eyesight.

It helps your eyes stay moist, allowing you to focus longer. Each time you shut your eyes, the Meibomian glands produce moisture to cleanse your eyes.

Again it helps your eyes feel refreshed ready to focus again. Because of these factors, this exercise helps decrease eye strain.

Here’s how to perform the blinking exercise:

· Sit comfortably with your eyes open.

· Blink 10-15 times very quickly.

· Close your eyes and relax for 20 seconds.

· Repeat this 4-5 times.

Change of Focus.

This exercise works by challenging your focus in that you change your focus from near objects to far objects.

This will strengthen the muscles in your eyes over time and improve your vision overall since it can be done anywhere.

One could imagine doing it on the underground without getting strange looks from those around them.

Zooming.

Another great eye exercise that strengthens your eyes and increases your ability to focus is zooming.

With this exercise, one has to you make an object zoom for your eyes so as to shift the focus of your vision.

To do this.

· Sit on a chair with your arm outstretched and your thumb up.

· Bend your arm gradually and draw it closer to your eyes.

· Zoom the thumb in focus.

Palming.

Palming is a technique of covering both eyes gently with your palms. You can feel the eye muscles relax as your eyes find relief in the darkness.

This is done to relieve stress around the eyes and as a way to relax your eyes whilst taking a computer break.

It helps by relaxing the eyes and also resulting in the redistribution of tears and lubrication of the eye surface.

Experts recommend that you must take a deep breath and relax your neck muscles, closing your eyes.

How to palm

· Rub the palms of your hands vigorously

· Place them gently over your eyelids until they are warm and

· Let the warmth of the palms transfer onto the eyes

· Persist until the heat from the hands has been completely absorbed by the eyes

The figure of eight.

This is to exercise your eye muscles and increase their flexibility. It also helps your eyes become stronger and more flexible.

Here’s what you need to do to perform the figure 8 exercise:

· Pick a point on the floor about 10 feet in front of you and focus on it.

· Trace an imaginary figure eight with your eyes.

· Keep tracing for 30 seconds, and then switch directions.
